Kreirati Excel tabele radimo na dva načina, izradom vizuelne tabele ovičavanjem dela radnog prostora (sheet) ili izradom objekta tabele. U razvoju Excel-a postoje dva bitna razdoblja, do Office 2003 i od Office 2007 do danas. Od verzije 2007 Microsoft je uveo objekat tabele sa pregršt novih osobina.
Podatke o nečemu (npr. ljudima, stvarima, objektima) možemo evidentirati narativno, opisivanjem ili navođenjem u tekstu jedan za drugim u bilo kom delu rečenice. Recimo da želimo da evidentiramo nadimke, imena i prezimena naših poznatih glumaca: Nikolić Gaga Dragan, Vlastimir Đuza Stojiljković, Stole Stojan Aranđelović, Miodrag Čkalja Petrović, Miodrag Slaviša Mali, itd. Ovako navedeni mogu nas dovesti u zabunu, da ne znamo kojoj osobi šta je nadimak, ime ili prezime.

Vizuelna tabela u Excel-u
Radni prostor za izradu tabela koji se u nekim verzijama zvao Sheets dok u drugim Worksheets je bio osnovni radni prostor za izradu tabela. Iako je od verzije 2007 došlo do eksplozije u broju korisnika excel-a mnogi i danas koriste radni prostor kao univerzalnu tabelu. U njoj bi iscrtali linije podebljali slova, ugradili funkcije i formule, obojili ćelije, i na kraju štampali tu vizuelnu tabelu koja u suštini predstavlja građen deo ćelija u radnom prostoru.

Kako se broj redova u radnom prostoru povećao na maksimalan broj od 1.048.576, pored mnogih alata pojavio se i objekat tabela. To se desilo bez reklame i mnogi korisnici nisu primetili da u traci sa alatima Insert postoji i dugme sa slikom tabele.

Visual spreadsheet in Excel
A workspace for creating tables, which in some versions was called Sheets , while in others Worksheets was the basic workspace for creating tables.
