data<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n<span>Dragging-loading-importing data from TXT format files to Excel can be done in two ways.\u00a0Using\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>Open<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0(select TXT file type) and using the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>PowerQuery<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0functionality built into versions 2019-2021-365.\u00a0In previous versions 2010, 2013, and 2016, this functionality was optional and was additionally installed on top of an existing Excel installation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span>In\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kalkulacija.com\/wordpress\/istorijat-dodavanja-formula-u-excelu\/\"><span>versions<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0:\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>2003, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019, 2021, 365, for\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"appliesToItem\"><span>\u00a0Mac<\/span><\/span><span>\u00a0\u00a0and for\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"appliesToItem\"><span>the web<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" OPEN<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>The size of the TXT file is determined by the operating system and can be 2GB for FAT16B, 4GB for FAT32, 2GB for HFS, etc.\u00a0Which allows you to record a table of 10 columns (each column of 10 bytes) and almost 20 million rows, of course if you have a program that can generate or Notepad that can print such a file.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>We certainly didn&#8217;t forget the delimiter, which can be: Tab (TAB character &#8211; ASCII character code 009), semicolon, comma, space, or user-defined character.\u00a0Also, let&#8217;s not forget that the maximum allowed table in Excel is 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This is also a limitation for this type of data upload for further processing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It means that we do all the processing of more than a million rows using PowerQuery and PowerPivot functionalities.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Drag_data_wizard\"><\/span><span id=\"Carobnjak_za_prevlacenje_podataka\" class=\"ez-toc-section\"><\/span><span>Drag data wizard<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span>You can open a text file that you created in another program as an Excel workbook using the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>Open command.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span>Opening a text file in Excel does not change the file format \u2014 you can see this in the Excel title bar, where the file name retains the text file extension.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>Go to\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>File<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0&gt;\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>Open<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0\u00a0and browse to the location that contains the text file.<\/span><br \/>\n<span>Select\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>a TXT file from the File Type drop-down list in the\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span><strong>Open<\/strong>\u00a0dialog\u00a0 .<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3520 \" the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>Open<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0button, a three-step help wizard will be launched.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span>The first step<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>It expects you to determine whether you will use a special column delimiter to separate the values \u200b\u200bby column, or whether you will use the number of characters to determine the width for all rows.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>The wizard recommends the code layout of the text (UTF-8) as well as the option to check if the table header is in the first row (My data has headers.)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3510 size-full\" character such as Tab (\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>Tab<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0), Semicolon (\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>Semicolon<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0), Comma (\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>Comma<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0), Space (\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>Space<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0) or some other character you specify (\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>Other<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>In case you have consecutive delimiters, for example, duplicated, tripled, check the independent box to treat consecutive delimiters as one (\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>Treat consecutive delimiters as one<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>And finally set the quotation marks for column from the TXT file.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>The default value is General format (\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>General<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0), it can also be text\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>,<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0date (\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>Date<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0) in a certain orthographic form (\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>DMY<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0, day, month and year), or simply do not drag and import a column (\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>Do not import column (skip)<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Here you can simply leave everything in the existing general format.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"Prevlacenje_upotrebom_PowerQuery\" class=\"ez-toc-section\"><\/span><span>Drag using PowerQuery<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>In case we work with more than a million rows in the table (saved in TXT format), the only way to do it in Excel is to use the PowerQuery functionality.\u00a0PowerQuery is an add-on in versions 2010 to 2016 and must be installed afterwards, and in versions 2019, 2021 and 365 it is an indispensable function on the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>Data tab.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span>When you open the Data<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0tab\u00a0, the first tool on the ribbon is\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>Get Data<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0.\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>In the first From File<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0option ,\u00a0select\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>From Text\/CSV<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0, as in the following image.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/kalkulacija.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/txt02.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span>In the file selection dialog (Files), select the folder and the TXT file you want to upload.\u00a0After the information window for connecting to the file, the content opens as in the following image:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/kalkulacija.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/txt03.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span>When we load data from TXT format and we do not know which character separates the data by column, it is smarter to load each row into one column, and perform the processing itself, i.e. the transformation, in PowerQuery.\u00a0Simply by choosing for the Delimiter (middle column) a character that we know does not exist in the TXT file.\u00a0In the specific case it is\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>Colon<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/kalkulacija.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/txt04.png\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"PowerQuery_Editor\" class=\"ez-toc-section\"><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"PowerQuery_Editor\"><\/span><strong>PowerQuery Editor<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span>The necessary transformation of the data from the TXT file will be done by clicking on\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>Transform Data<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0, which calls\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>the PowerQuery Editor<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/kalkulacija.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/txt05.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span>In order to separate that one column into several columns, we will use the tools on the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>Add Column<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0tab .\u00a0The first tool\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>Column From Examples-From Selection<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0as in the following picture allows us a simple way of forming a new column by specifying an example.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/kalkulacija.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/txt06.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span>An example of separating the payer&#8217;s account number can be seen in the following picture.\u00a0Most often, one example is not enough, so it is necessary for the user to correct the content in the line where he offers a different solution, as in this example in the 9th line.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/kalkulacija.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/txt07.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span>We can also extract the date from the text date format and later transform it into the correct date format, which we will see in the next steps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/kalkulacija.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/txt08.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span>Likewise, if we want to extract text into a separate column by specifying parts of the text between two delimiters, select the option\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>Text Between Delimiters<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0in the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>Extract<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0menu of the same tab.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/kalkulacija.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/txt09.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><span>The Extract<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0option is on the same toolbar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/kalkulacija.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/txt11.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span>The size of the delimiter itself is not limited, and it can be any string that we define in the dialog in the following image.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/kalkulacija.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/txt12.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span>We can repeat such an intuitive procedure as often as we need, based on the content in one or more selected columns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/kalkulacija.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/txt10.png\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" columns<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span>In case we want to separate all numbers and texts into separate columns, we can use the option\u00a0<\/span><strong><span>Split Column \u2013 By Digit to Non-Digit<\/span><\/strong><span>\u00a0as shown in the following image.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/kalkulacija.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/txt14.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span>We can see what the result of that separation looks like immediately after clicking on the
